There are many good quality ebook readers on the market these days.  Amazon’s Kindle 2 is one of the top choices, with hundreds of thousands of books to choose from; The Sony Reader is stylish and has an option of different color models; and Barnes & Noble’s The Nook brings the industry’s first touch screen color option to the market.  Each of these top selling brands have their own unique features to give them an edge over the competition.  This page reviews the three top brands.

We will start by taking a look at the Amazon Kindle 2.  The Kindle 2 is less than a centimetre thick and offers multiple shades of grey to make reading easier.  You can also view black and white images on it, making it good for reading newspapers.  With a full sized keyboard, the Kindle 2 is very easy to use and navigate.  The text to speech function is great if you prefer to listen to your books instead of reading them.  With 2 gb of built in storage, it can hold approximately 1,500 books.  The Wi-Fi and wireless features of the Kindle 2 make it convenient to choose from the hundreds of thousands of titles Amazon has to offer.  The Wi-Fi function of the Kindle 2 can also be used to browse select text based websites on the internet such as Google and Wikipedia.  As with most of the other readers available, you can download the first chapter of the book before purchasing it.  This allows you to see if you like it or not before spending the money.  Great reviews on this one.

Sony was the pioneer of the ebook reader with their Sony Reader.  They lost a lot of ground, though, when Amazon made the Kindle 2 with Wi-Fi access and Sony did not have this function.  In order to download ebooks to the Sony Reader, you need to have a USB connection to a computer.  You can store approximately 350 ebooks on the Sony Reader.  It comes standard with 512 mb of built in storage, which is expandable through Sony memory sticks.  Sony leads the pack in ebook readers when it comes to fashion.  You can find it in silver, black and red, compared to the standard white version of the Kindle 2.  The review are mixed for the Sony Reader.

Barnes & Noble’s The Nook is a newer competitor in the ebook reader market.  It has an innovative color touchscreen.  When you browse for books on it, you can see a color version of the covers.  The Nook also has Wi-Fi and wireless access to their gigantic selection of books.  It has more than a million books to choose from.  There are also more than 500,000 free ebooks available on their network.  The Nook has 2 gb of built in storage, along with a slot for memory cards.  A neat function that sets the Nook apart from their competitors is that you can share your books.  Each ebook you buy can be shared with one of your friends who has The Nook.  Rave reviews everywhere you read about The Nook.

Currently, The Nook seems to have a bit of an edge over the competition.  They only lack web browsing capabilities and text to speech technology when compared to the Kindle 2.  In time, all the brands will pick up the better features of their competitors.  This will bring more equality in the marketplace.  For now, though, The Nook tops my reviews list as the best ebook reader.
